OWhat Can We Do to Get Ready for a Global Community?

Oby Gwenneth Morgan

When faced with the prospect of a global community, some countries will have a lot to give and others will have a lot of needs. It would be in the best interest of the entire world if today's countries with abundant resources would work to lessen the gap between the super rich and extremely poor in order to be prepared.

The first steps necessary would be to map out clearly the challenges of all. Why are the poor, poor? How can the wealthier people help without becoming poor themselves?

The most important point to make here is: money is not the only way to help poor people.

Hopefully, we've all seen the benefit of positive human interaction. Millions of Americans volunteer their time to help others. Even a little consideration or a kind word of encourage can have positive repercussions that expand far beyond the reach of the person who spoke. This kind of stuff is simple and and it doesn't cost a dime.

But some say, "Time is money!" As if money is the most important thing. [snort!] It's not. Yes, it can help to make you feel more comfortable, but it's being comfortable that's really important. How much comfort do some people need? Can we truly, morally, weigh the ultra comfort of one against the survival needs of another? How did Jesus feel about this?

While I'm no expert on government, I absolutely believe that balance can be achieved without any group feeling like they are bearing the full responsibility. Even poor people must be expected to volunteer their time, treat people with kindness and contribue to the general welfare of all as they rise up out of poverty. The needs of those with more must be considered as well and they should be shown our most sincere gratitude and appreciation in new ways.

I suggest this for our richest nations now because, when it comes time to create a global community, it will be these nations that will be asked to provide a lot of support. And, it will be the model set by these countries that will be the foundation of how our planet is run. Of course, everything will even out in the long run, after poor countries have had a chance to get on their feet and start contributing in their own ways. The richest nations will actually being making a great investment into the future of Humanity and Earth.

The wealthy could still be comfortable (everyone could be, the Universe is a very abundant place!) and everyone could feel more useful and fulfilled, knowing that they contribute to making the world a better place, a place where human life is valued above things.
